Blog Post #3 - Sound Unit

Sound is very crucial to every film. The sound of a film help with a higher understanding of what a viewer is witnessing in a film. The films sound also affects the viewer depth of emotion. Whether the film makers want the viewer to feel empathy, tense, joy, etc. they will use sound to inflict those emotions. Sound all together, whether it’s silence, dialogue or the sound track, helps bring the final film together.

The film Call Me by Your Name is really a masterpiece and has a incredible sound track. In this specific scene, the film makers wanted to match up the shot of him crying with a song from the sound score of the film. The song has a sad tone to it, they do this to make the viewer feel empathy for him. As he’s crying there in front of the fire as life goes on in the background as if to say that he can’t move on from the lost of Oliver. Which the music in background helps the viewer feel empathetic towards him. A song with a happy tone wouldn’t cause the viewer to feel that same emotion as shown in the scene. There is also an example of a sound bridge which carries from the sound of the fire to the music as the loudness of the music increases.

In this scene from Avengers there a few examples of sound design. The Hulk’s roar is a sound effect and the loudness of it is high. The background music is a nondiegetic sound that helps with the action and the emotions of the viewers. The sound of the bullets go back n forth to being onscreen and offscreen sound when it changes from shot to shot. The sounds of the bullets also change the loudness of them when it changes from shot to shot as well. that is an example of sound perspective.

FINAL PROJECT UPDATE- SOUND:

For my sound design in my final project I'll be using different examples of sound. There will be nondiegetic background music mixed onscreen sounds of things going on in their world. The background music will be classical piano. In the beginning the piano will be more cheerfully then turn to a sad tone when she's an adult. This is because I want the viewers to fell the emotion of sadness and sympathy for the character. The sound happing within the films world that I want to keep is the sounds of water running, children screaming, car sounds. This is because her life is quite and lonely, I want to show the parts of growing up and being an adult that most don't share. How free yet lonely things can be, instead of the cheerfulness of childhood. I won't add any dialogue because that's not the vibe I am going for.
